Herbert Boyd, 94 - Past Grand Master of New Jersey

CLIFTON – Herbert N. Boyd, 94, of Manahawkin, died on Friday, Nov. 19, 2011.

Born in Paterson, Mr. Boyd lived in Hawthorne, Clifton, Waretown, and Forked River before moving to Manahawkin in 2002. He was an expeditor for PSE&G for 31 years before retiring in 1977. Previously, he worked for Richardson Scale Co., Clifton, and Wright Aeronautical, Paterson. He was a semi-professional baseball player in the Paterson area in the 1930s and 1940s. And, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Furthermore, he was a 50-year member of the Masonic Fraternity in New Jersey, serving as the Grand Master of Masons for the State of New Jersey in 1981 and 1982. He was a past master of Clifton Masonic Lodge 203, Clifton, and a member of Mariners Lodge 150, Barnegat. He was a past district deputy grand master of the Fourth Masonic District and a past president of the Masonic Kilties of New Jersey. He was a past most wise master of the Valley of Northern New Jersey Scottish Rite, Lincoln Park, receiving his 33rd degree from the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite in 1973. He was a past president of the Lacey Masonic Quarry Club and a member of the Clifton Craftsmen’s Club, the North Jersey Past Masters Association, the Society of St. John of New Jersey, and the George Washington Masonic Association. And, he was a member of Peace Chapter 98 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Clifton, and a past patron of Clifton Chapter 269 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Additionally, he was a member of the Forked River Presbyterian Church and a former director of Old Guard Chapter 19, Forked River. He was a former member and ordained elder of the Allwood Community Church, Clifton, and Ocean Community Church, Manahawkin. He was a former moderator of the Passaic-Clifton Christian Men’s Fellowship, Clifton. He was a member of the Society for the Preservation of Barber Shop Singing in America and sang tenor with the Sunny Siders Quartet in the 1950s and 1960s as well.

Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife, the former Aileen Kernes; his daughters, Beverly Ann Boyd and Sherry Lee Brand, both of Scranton, Pa., and Cathy Mae Yingling of Morris Plains; his sister, Barbara Soder, of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Mae Meyer; and his brothers, Everett, Charles, Norman, Donald, and Richard.
